Peace talks or war planning? [private-Lux]

Post by Noah Atwood on Thu Jun 22, 2017 1:20 pm

Nighttime was falling rather slowly these days. The time had officially switched to summer and with it came long days and warm nights filled with the smells of barbecues, kids laughter, and summer festivals. Noah walked the streets in rather plain clothing compared to his normal attire. He had left his official Archmage robe at home due to the heat it was nearly unbearable to wear something so heavy. The streets were filled with people, all going about their own business, just as Noah was going about his.

He had made plans to meet up with the Captain of the Knights in Elagrid, Lux. The two have had a few past encounters, they both did hold high titles in the county after all. Noah really did not have that great of a relationship with the man but that had a part to do with the fact that the two were totally different in personalities and beliefs. Noah called the meeting though between the two in secret, well at least as secretive as he could make it. It was hard for either man to walk the streets without being seen, while the spy network in this country was not as thickly woven as it was in others, a word that the two were meeting would eventually make its way back to the royal courts.

Noah approached a large inn/tavern near the center of town and walked in. He immediately made his way up the stairs near the rear of the tavern entering a hallway with several different wooden doors. These rooms could be rented out for lodging or meetings. One of the doors tucked in the corner of the hallway, was the one that he headed towards. He had used this inn before different reasons, he knew the owner would keep prying eyes and ears away from the room and let the two meet in peace.

Noah entered the intimate room that only had a handful of candles illuminating it. Finding that the lighting was subpar and a bit ominous he blew out the candles and a simple wave of his hand caused several orbs of light to float about the room taking on the shapes of diamonds. There was a bookshelf, a small table that sat six, and a window in the room. On the table sat a pitcher of water as well as a few bottles of red wine and glasses. Noah opted to open up one of the bottles and pour himself a glass while he waited for the other guest to arrive.

The two were meeting here tonight in order to discuss the rumors that were coming from Vandale. Vandale has traditionally been Elagrid’s most beneficial trade and military partner but as of late the monarchy in the region was weakening and the thieves and assassins guilds were taking more of a stronghold there. Elagrid’s safety and economy could be at risk. Noah had ideas for a new alliance but he needed the backing of the Knight Commander before bringing this up with the king.

Lux had left his quarters in the Guildhall. He was in his traditional leather armor with steel shoulders and some black steel mail underneath. He had his twin swords strapped to his back with his white knight-commander belt. Tonight he was supposed to meet with the Archmage to discuss some plan for a renewed alliance with Vandale. Their child of a king had been corrupted and was allowing the thieves and assassins and other unsavory people to sink their fangs into the Kingdom. If it continued unchecked, it could pose a security threat to Elagrid.

While he wasn’t adept at peace talks, he was very practical and held a position that was critical to the kingdom. He himself had trained Heimdal the king and knew that the boy would listen to anything he had to say or at least would give it thought. Which is why, once he entered the room in the inn, he would sit at the table and his piercing yellow eyes would bore into Noah’s eyes, waiting for the younger boy to speak first.

Noah could sense the man’s presence enter the inn below. While his natural aura was much weaker than Noah’s own, it was still unique even among the other rift-raft down there. Noah took a sip of his wine and waited for the man to make his way up the stairs and into their private room. While his back was turned to the door, the moment it opened he knew who would be there behind him. While he had known Lux for a long time, and by long, he meant a couple hundred years, the man was a shut in. His secret to such a long life was speculated throughout the kingdom, due to his close relationship with the king, the church left him at bay. Noah had his own theory, one he might attempt to prove tonight if the man got a bit too cheeky.

As the wolf of a man found his seat at the table the two locked eyes for a moment. Noah peered into the cat’s eye yellow iris of Lux trying to read the old man. The two sat in silence for a brief moment waiting for the other to speak their peace. Since Noah was the one that called this informal meeting he would be the one to break the ice. Noah cleared his throat “Thank you for meeting me tonight Lux. It’s been sometime since I saw you, though you haven’t seemed to age a day. What has it been a year or more?”” Jab one. “So, I’ve asked you to come tonight to discuss a possible use of the knights...as you know reports from Vandale keep getting worse everyday. It seems that even the royal court has had some sort of doings with the thieves and assassin guilds, a poor crowd for our top ally to be apart of. If things keep getting worse the city of Esblem may be at risk of becoming influenced by these organizations just as Wintacast has. This would devastate the economy of Elagrid...Esblem is one of the more populated and traveled city out of the entire kingdom due to its close proximity to Vandale and Ganamarsh. I propose that we not only set up more guards not just along the borders but also within the city itself by moving the knights guild to the city. I know such an expense would be quite costly and could potentially weaken the fortifications of the capital but perhaps that is why a new trade alliance with our northern neighbors is needed.”

The old wolf of Elagrid was a cold man but no fool, if Noah appeased to his logical side he may win him over. Of course he was not going to do anything without Heimdal’s approval or anything that would put his men in harm's way. Noah could not just ask from Lux but also bend and give something. “I know this is a big move but I think that by offering a trade a military alliance to Ganamarsh we can secure our northeast border even more from the darker guilds. Of course there is still the matter of Wintacast...it is falling more and more into the clutches of these guilds. In order to thwart their efforts on taking over the city I propose that the mages guild be relocated to Wintacast. We could take over the security of this town and Sorbrar Forest nearby. The forest is becoming dangerous due to the vampire and werewolf clans that roam it. While we would get backlash from the Vatican for not starting an all out holy war, I believe both of us would be on the same page in believing that vampires and werewolves are not inherently evil nor do they need to be wiped out. Placing myself in this region would keep the religious zealots at bay and give us a chance to clean up Wintacast….”

By moving the mages guild he would leave a bit of a vacuum in the capital for the assassins guild and thieves to move to but the Vatican held a firm grip on that city, it would be hard for them to make a major dent in the area plus Noah was not too far away. Now the tricky part was to somehow convince Lux that their alliance with Ganamarsh was a needed one. Ganamarsh was already in an alliance with Rimbrad, but neither country were known for their abundance in food. Elagrid was the breadbasket of the entire known world, while Vandale offered more fish, Elagrid had more fruit, vegetables, and grain than anybody else. The high elves would be a difficult one to win over though but giving them a good deal on Elagrid wheat might do the trick. Before he would propose this part though he would wait and hear what the older man had to say about his first few parts.
